The Report from the Front Line at Bastien’s

Bastien’s Foundations Grand Opening event was a huge success.

The Wall Art at Bastien's

I felt like such a celebrity.  Bastien’s gave me the red carpet treatment, but I heard women say things like, “your name is written down by my computer”, “I saw you on TV”, “I came here to see you”.  And they were all walking out with shopping bags in their hands.

The manager, assistant manager and fitters are excellent. Bastien’s embraces all women above a D cup, in fact they carry up to an N cup. The store inventory caters to both full bust and plus size.  Bastien’s carries the entire Carissa Rose line, the shirts, dresses and silks. And just like Carissa Rose, Bastien’s mission is to empower women, the hard to fit women, with comfort and confidence to live each day to the fullest.

The variety of sizes represented

The highlight of the day for me, as always is fitting women – in both bras and clothing – was seeing the broad smile spread across a woman’s face as she put on Irina in white.  It was a wonderful thing to observe, she felt that she had “arrived”.  Her comment was, “I’ve always wanted to take a picture of myself in a straw fedora and white shirt with french cuffs”, as she posed in front of the mirror.  That is a great memory for me.  As a side note, she is a DC policewoman who came into the store wearing a 42DDD, left wearing a 38LL.  I personally was gassed that 38LL fit into Carissa Rose XLW!

Bastien’s Foundations is in Gaithersburg, MD (the DC area) in Lakeforest Mall.

Why Rose Rewards and what are Petal Points?

Because they are a good thing.  They are our way of saying thank you, and I am a stickler for saying thank you.  That’s probably because I know I ask a lot of people, vendors, associates, husband, etc.  So, instead of feeling bad about always pushing the limits, I express my thanks in a sincere and handwritten note.

I’m cynical enough to think that most rewards programs are marketing hype so a consumer spends more: more at a particular store, or more spent using a particular credit card.

But Rose Rewards is not marketing hype, it truly is an expression of gratitude and appreciation for choosing Carissa Rose.  We know you only have a set amount of discretionary income, and have chosen to spend some of that with us.

Personally, I wish my local coffee house, or even Starbucks, had a rewards program.  Thankfully, our family’s favorite ice cream parlor does.  Twelve punches on my card and someone (usually Daddy because his is the most expensive) gets a free ice cream.

Rose Rewards come in Petal Points. $1 = 1 POINT. For every 500 Petal Points you accumulate, you earn a $40 Rose Reward. Redeem your points for merchandise at CarissaRose.com. Petal Points don’t expire and they’re fully transferrable! So, give your points away to your best friend or mom – someone who needs (and will look great in) Carissa Rose.

That being said, we hope you earn a lot of Petal Points!

Highlight the Positive

The positive difference between your bust and your waist.  We have fit women with as much as a naturally occurring 14″ difference between their bust and their waist and as low as a 6″ difference.

Nipping in the high waist is universally flattering.  Women are usually smallest in the under bust/high waist area.  If you are in your mid twenties or haven’t bore multiple children, you may still have a nicely dented waist at your belly button or lower, but for the rest of us, we need that high waist snug to show our shape.

Christina Hendricks is the IT girl for curves these days.  Here is a picture of her with a drapey, flowy dress.  It does tie at the waist, but it is a narrow tie while the bodice is blousy and the skirt billowy, so the tie is not very strong in defining  her waist.

Here she is again in a sharply tailored (I’ve read her being quoted as saying, “my body looks best in tailored designs”) high waisted dress.  The difference is remarkable.

Pre Ms. Hendricks, the IT girl for curves was Salma Hayek.  Her dress in this picture nips in at the high waist, literally just under the bust, then drapes in Grecian fashion to a column skirt.  Having an angled or slightly curved waist seam/band gives more direction to the eye, creating a slimmer silhouette line.

Its our goal at Carissa Rose to highlight your best bits every day.  Nipped waists, flowing skirts, strong tailoring.  And that makes us even more excited as we work on our fall styles!

Its that time of year again – Swimwear

I’m sorry for the delayed timing of this blog post. The posts used to be always on Sunday/Monday, then it was Monday/Tuesday, now I’m lucky to get it out by Wednesday. Things are getting really busy over here, can you tell?

Kudos to MSN for featuring our local NBC video this weekend. That lead to lots of inquiries, and we received several email from women looking for swimwear. It is April after all, we should have already covered 2010 swimwear.

Standing up Tall

When I was growing up, it was my Mom’s mantra that all the girls in the family (there were 7 girl cousins) stood up straight. Literally. She continually admonished us, “pull your shoulders back, lift your chest and hold your head high. Be proud of who you are!”. This is just one of the many Helene-isms that I like to call to mind.

I was reminded of the importance of good posture, especially when one has a full bust, last week while traveling. I worked all day with a new business associate, bless her heart, whose posture resembled the shape of a crescent moon.

If you’ve been blessed with a full bust – and you probably have been or you wouldn’t be reading this blog – it is imperative that you stand up straight. The following are my pointers to good posture:

  1. Pull your shoulders back. Not in a militaristic or contrived manner, but in a relaxed and purposeful way. To find a natural position, lift the shoulders to the ears, and then roll them to the back. Where the shoulders stop is a good resting place for them.
  2. Lift the chest. I like to envision a string attached to the top of my head. We want to pull that string so the entire body is lifted to a taller stance. This is especially important for short-waisted women who have four inches or less between the bottom of the rib cage and the top of the hip bone.
  3. Aim for a steady gait when walking. We usually aren’t standing still, our posture comes into play when working, walking, etc. Whether you are hurriedly going from meeting to meeting in three inch heels or you are casually going about your errands in flat boots, train yourself to lift your entire leg (think knee lifts here), not just swing the lower leg around. Then gently place your foot on the ground. Remember, we are elegantly and stately creatures, no hoofs flopping down.

Now, over to you. Firstly, what are your posture pet peeves? Either in yourself or what you observe in others. Do you ever just want to pull someone’s shoulders back because you know they’d look so much better standing up straight? Secondly, if you have any secrets that you use to train yourself to have better posture, please share.
